Downloading Files Using The Browser

There are primarily two ways to download files from the Internet. One is through FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You need an FTP program to download files with this method. The other way of going about it is to use your Internet Browser.

When you click on a button or a hyperlink that is designed to start the downloading of a file, you will be presented with the file Download dialog box.

This dialog box will give you the option of downloading the program and saving it to disk, or beginning the installation at this point. Saving it to disk is highly recommended! If you choose to "Run this program from it's current location", the installation process will begin, but it may be very slow and unstable as each file of the program will still need to be downloaded. Some programs, such as the one that BidPlus Millennium uses for downloads, are designed to install the program from the web. It is specificaly designed for this purpose and is very stable. Most are not. However, if you choose to "Save this program to disk", then you will download a copy of the file to your hard drive. This will allow you to install the program from your hard drive to it's permanent location as the complete program at a later time. It will also allow you to have a copy of the file handy in case a re-installation is ever necessary without needing to download it again. Once you choose to "Save this program to disk", you will be presented with a map, or path, as to where on your hard drive the file will go. The path will look something like this:

Think of it as simply a filing cabinet. The drives and desktop are listed in a hierarchy order. The Folders are listed alphabetically. (This example uses the file from our old program BidPlus Gold. The file is called Bpgold.exe.). From this point, you are able to click and choose a Folder that you would like the file to download into. Or you may simply choose to let it download directly to your desktop (the screen that's displayed when you first start your computer). But the important thing is to remember the path so that you can find it and start the installation once the download is complete. To start the installation, simply double click on the file itself.
